Biomega NYC: A High Design Lifestyle Bicycle

Integrating Style, Functionality, and Sustainability

The NYC follows Biomega’s design principle of visibility, usability, longevity, and integration. It is optimized for city use and aims to compete with cars of the same lifestyle rather than traditional bicycles. The bike features an MTB front mudguard that is seamlessly built-in, showcasing Biomega's commitment to integrating functionality into their designs.

One of the standout features of the NYC is its chainless transmission. Instead of a traditional chain drive, it utilizes a carbon belt drive, offering a smoother and more efficient riding experience. The bike is made from lightweight aluminum, ensuring a comfortable and agile ride through the city streets.

With sustainability in mind, the NYC is built using environmentally friendly materials. All parts are made from aluminum or stainless steel, and the carbon belt drive further reduces the bike's carbon footprint. The integrated mudguard in the down tube is made using hydroforming, a manufacturing process that allows for precise shaping and lightweight construction.

The NYC is available in two sizes, medium (51 cm) and large (55 cm), and features a 26" wheelset. It weighs approximately 17 kg and is packed in a double-layer cardboard box measuring 20cm x 80cm x 140cm when shipped.

Designed to last longer than ordinary city bikes, the NYC offers a dynamic and aggressive riding experience. It is a high design lifestyle object that combines style, functionality, and sustainability. By integrating design principles from the car industry, Biomega aims to compete on lifestyle and encourage more people to choose bicycles as their preferred mode of urban transportation.

The Biomega NYC project started in Copenhagen in January 2010 and was showcased at Eurobike in Friedrichshafen in September 2010. The design team conducted extensive research, focusing on anthropological and market-based studies. Their goal was to find a way to compete with cars in city centers and understand the factors that influence behavior change. By leveraging design principles and offering a superior lifestyle experience, Biomega aims to promote cycling as a viable alternative to cars in urban environments.

The Biomega NYC received the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2011 in the Vehicle, Mobility, and Transportation Design category. This award recognizes the bike's well-designed, practical, and innovative features that meet professional and industrial requirements. The NYC is respected for integrating industry best practices, competent technical characteristics, and contributing to a better world through its sustainable design.
